The service aims to help blind and partially sighted children (from pre-school age up to the age of 19) to get the most from their education, working with the children and the Education Authority’s schools to achieve this. 

The service is comprised of specialist teachers who are qualified to teach learners with a visual impairment. As well as teaching duties, they:
- carry out assessments of sight and needs
- advise and support teachers so that pupils gain access to the National Curriculum
- advise and train classroom assistants
- advise and support parents
- advise the LEA and schools on appropriate equipment and aids
- work with other agencies, especially RNIB, staff at the Low Vision Clinic, Ysbyty Gwynedd and the Society for the Blind, Bangor
- teach braille (in English and Welsh)
- encourage the social and personal development of children with a visual impairment.
