Sightline Directory

The directory for services aimed at helping blind or partially sighted people

Search Sightline

You can search Sightline for organisations and services using keywords or a location or both.

You can search for a single word or a phrase (like ‘learning braille’). Whatever you search for in the keyword box, Sightline will try to find in the names of organisations, descriptions of organisations and the services they offer. If you type more than one word, Sightline will only show listings that have that exact phrase within them.

Then specify a location – it could be the name of a place or a postcode. If you don’t specify a location, the search results will be for the whole of the UK.

Refine your search

When you’ve performed a search, you will have the option to refine your search results by distance from the location you gave and by category of organisation.

National organisations

You can also select whether to include national organisations and services in your search results. Many national organisations provide support and services regardless of where you are in the UK.

Browse Sightline

From the home page, you can browse the organisations in Sightline by selecting a category to view:

  1. services offered
  2. or organisation type
  3. or both.

Sightline will then show you matching organisations in your results list.

Browsing by services offered allows you to narrow down your search one step further. For example, if you were to select 'Cultural activities', Sightline will show you organisations that offer these and allow you to select which sorts of cultural activity you are interested in: art, dance, drama and music.

Refine your results

If you have used a keyword or location (or both) to search, you can also browse by category to refine your results. You can refine by any combination of services offered, type of organisation, who is supported, and whether the organisation is local or national (covers the entire UK).

Can’t find what you’re looking for?

If you don’t get many (or any!) appropriate results:

  • be less specific with the keywords you used (for instance, instead of ‘organisations that teach braille to adults’ try ‘learning braille’)
  • try widening the distance or changing the location (for instance, from ‘Wells’ to ‘Somerset’).

If you get too many results to manage:

  • be more specific with your keyword (for instance, rather than ‘advice’ try ‘benefits advice’.)
  • try narrowing the distance or changing the location (for instance, rather than ‘England’ try ‘Birmingham’).

If you think that we need to add an organisation to the directory, please contact us to let us know.

Accessibility help

Sightline was designed, built and tested with accessibility at its heart.

Screen readers

Each page uses headings to sort and order the content on the page, and to help you navigate around the page. Links are clearly labelled.

Where there is a form (such as the search bar and contact us form), it has been designed to work with screen readers in ‘forms mode’.

If you use a screen reader to tab through content, you should find that the tab order is logical, putting the key information first.

Sightline magnifies without going fuzzy. The key information is left aligned, to minimise the risk of getting lost in white space on the page.

Once you have searched for an organisation, you can use the options on the left side of the page to refine your search results.

Text size and colour

You can change the text size on the website using the three different sized letter ‘A’s at the top right of every page.

There are also lots of ways that you can change the settings of your browser to make the font size, colour and other features work for you:

Manage listings

Add an organisation

Anyone can add an organisation to the listings. We will moderate your listing before making it live and we may need to contact you to verify certain details. If the organisation isn’t suitable for the directory, we reserve the right not to list it. Please refer to the terms and conditions for further information.

Suggest an organisation

If you think there’s an organisation that should be listed but isn’t, please contact us.

Edit a listing

Anyone can edit a listing using the 'Edit this listing' button on each organisation page. This button appears right at the bottom of the page and, if you are using screen reading software, will appear in your list of links.

We moderate all edits before making them live on Sightline. We may need to contact you to verify certain details.

Remove a listing

If you think a listing should be removed, please contact us.

You can review an organisation or service by giving it a star rating out of 5, with one star being the lowest rating and five stars being the highest rating. Please also add some comments to explain the rating you gave.

If you want to edit or delete a review that you’ve made, please contact us. You can’t edit or delete someone else’s review.

When you add a review, you will be asked for your name and your email address as well as your star rating and comments. Your name will be published next to your review. Your email address is not made public and we will not share it or use it for marketing purposes.

We moderate reviews before they go live. Please refer to the terms and conditions for more information.

Outside the UK

Sightline only contains details of services and organisations in the UK.
